Division 7 Series wraps up this weekend in Irwindale
Sept. 27, 2017

The 2017 Pacific Division Jr. Championship Series will draw to a close this weekend with the final doubleheader event at Irwindale Dragstrip. The track will open its gates at noon on Friday, Sept. 29, in preparation for the two-day event on Saturday and Sunday.

Division 7 Series logoThe Irwindale events are the ninth and 10th in the 10-race series that will determine the 2017 Division 7 champions in five categories: 6-9, 10-12, 13-14, 15-17, and Jr. Comp. A racer’s seven best events will count towards his or her final tally, and the racer with the most points in each class at the conclusion of this weekend’s events will be crowned champion.

Jacelyn Gonzaga (age 6-9), Macie Gordon (10-12), Braiden Chesleigh (13-14), Savannah Coates (15-17), and Derrick Hegwood (Jr. Comp) are the points leaders entering the final two events. With a 140-point lead over second place Reese Poe, Gonzaga has basically locked up the 6-9 class title, but the other four are up for grabs with many very close points battles.

In the 10-12 bracket, Gordon has an 85-point advantage over Cy Mitchell, and Dylan Hegwood is another nine points back in third. Morgan Clinton sits in the fourth position, 108 points out of the lead.

The 13-14 class is, for all intents and purposes, a two-driver battle between Chesleigh and Taylor Lee Taylor. Chesleigh is in the lead, but he holds just a 21-point lead over Taylor.

One of the best battles is in the 15-17 age group, which has five drivers within 65 points of one another. Coates leads the class by 23 points over Cade Poe. Brianna Wiens is another 10 points back in third, and Hannah Cook and Dylan Oliveira are 42 and 65 points out of the lead, respectively.

Derrick Hegwood’s points lead in Jr. Comp is just one point over A.J. Thomas, meaning either one could emerge victorious. Damon Bustamante is in third, 98 points behind Hegwood.
