Kyler Skjonsberg (Thunder) and Emily Girard (Lightning) tallied the most points in their respective categories to earn the Division 6 Infinity Coach Jr. Championship Series titles for 2017. The series featured 14 races, and a racer’s best seven events counted towards his or her final tally.
Skjonsberg won twice and finished as an event runner-up three times during the season to finish with 424 points, 55 points of second-place Kiandra Gaetz in the Thunder class. O’Riley Benda, Anastazja Gossette, Cole Dickhoff, Raylee Higgins, Kindi Opsal, Jaslyn Bean, Sasha Mercer, and Cole Caron rounded out the top 10.
Girard dominated the Lightning class, tallying a whopping 519 points to finish 127 points in front of Tanner Gaetz. Girard's worst finish in her seven points-earning events was a semifinal, a finish she recorded twice. In addition to the semi's, Girard also had three wins and two runner-up finishes during the season. Rounding out the top 10 in points were Zachary Gaetz, Hunter Jackson, Selena Lenihan, Josh Schmanke, Cooper Chun, Kaden Bean, Isabella Mercer, Ian Theofelis.
The series wrapped up with a pair of doubleheader events at M.H.D.R.A. Dragstrip and Renegade Raceway in late September and early October. Following are some highlights from those events.
M.H.D.R.A. DRAGSTRIP
Medicine Hat, Alta. (Sept. 30-Oct. 1)
Cole Caron, far lane, took home Saturday’s Thunder trophy after besting Isaac Stettner in the final round.
Emily Girard, far lane, added to her points lead in the Lightning class when she defeated Zachary Gaetz in Saturday’s final.
Kindi Opsal, near lane, earned her second series win in the Thunder class when she outlasted Kyler Skjonsberg in Sunday’s race.
Tanner Gaetz, near lane, was Sunday’s Lightning winner, stopping Trevor Moore in the final.
RENEGADE RACEWAY
Yakima, Wash. (Oct. 7-8)
Jordan Calhoun drove his dragster to victory in Lightning on Saturday, defeating Emily Girard in the final. Dylanie Petersohn was Saturday’s Thunder victor after getting the better of Raylee Higgins in the final.
Korban Lewis, near lane, topped Carson Campbell in Sunday’s Lightning final. Lewis was joined in victory Sunday by O’Riley Benda, who defeated Parker Miller for the Thunder trophy.
